Freilichtmuseum Vogtsbauernhof, an open-air museum in Gutach | 12 km

The Black Forest open-air museum „Schwarzwälder Freilichtmuseum Vogtsbauernhof“ in Gutach is the oldest open-air museum in Baden-Württemberg.  It showcases how people have lived and worked in the Black Forest in the last few centuries. The open-air museum takes its name from the Vogtsbauernhof, or Vogt’s farm, that has stood at this location since 1612 and whose owner was the bailiff of the Gutach Valley around 1650. Hermann Schilli founded the museum in 1963 with this Black Forest house. Over the course of the years, other farm houses have been added. These were taken apart at their original locations and rebuilt in the Vogtsbauernhof open-air museum. The farm houses are complemented by several functional buildings such as mills, storage houses, baking houses and saw mills. There are also farm animals of various old breeds that live on the 5.5 hectare premises. Daily events such as mill shows, craft performances, special exhibits and activities for children and families as well as themed days. The museum is open every day from the end of March to the beginning of November.

Tour of the Ortenau | approx. 120 km

The Ortenau stretches out over almost 70km from the Oos River by Baden-Baden and the Murg tributary in the North to the Bleichbach by Herbolzheim in the South, which is actually in the Breisgau region. The largest city in the Ortenau, as well as its cultural and economic center, is Offenburg. The steep western slopes of the Black Forest are typical for this region. They merge into the rolling hills of the vineyards, orchards and vegetable plantations. It is a pleasure to watch the landscape roll by on sunny days. To see the castle ruins sitting on top of the hills, stop in a cozy village and enjoy some homemade cake or a glass of wine on a garden terrace. The wine here is excellent. It’s well worth your time to stop at a winery and try some! You can get tips directly from Mr. Junghanns at the Hotel Hirschen.

At the weekly markets, regional harvest-fresh, organic fruits are on offer.

For shopping and strolling, stop in Offenburg.
